This video in Dave Ramsey’s “Momentum Theorem” series focuses on intensity. Authors and writers have to be intense in coming up with ideas, writing every day, reading regularly, continuing to learn how to write. But it happens not all at once, but over time. Over time as we write and stay consistent, great things happen!

Notes from myself and others who have heard this teaching around the web:

  • Pour intensity into things that really matter.
  • Everyone is intense about something. Sports fans will stand in the freezing cold at a football game with no shirt on and their face painted blue. They’re intense!
  • Live your life with that same intensity. Be intense at your marriage, your parenting, your calling. You’ve got to be fired up.
  • But you cannot be intense without focus or your intensity will be too spread out then.
  • Intensity causes things to move. If you’re only focused and intense for a few hours or a few days, nothing will move or change.
  • Scripture: “Whatever your hand finds to do, do it with all your might.” (Ecclesiastes 9:10, NIV)

  • Momentum builds over time. Reread the story of the Tortoise and the Hare, a great fable about the importance of perseverance. It’s easy to think success happens overnight, but that’s rare. Malcolm Gladwell makes the point in Outliers: The Story of Success that proficiency in anything requires an investment of about 10,000 hours of practice/applied skill. Even if we are slow and ugly—like a tortoise—we will succeed if we just stick with it. Be the focused, intense tortoise and not the ADHD hare. The TORTOISE wins the race every time.
  • Years of focused intensity will put you among the best.
  • Focused intensity is good, but if it only lasts for three days, it is not going to amount to anything. This is the hardest part of the equation.
  • It takes time to be successful. Gladwell says the #1 quality of those who are successful is relational intelligence… the ability to relate to people.
  • “If I persist long enough, I will WIN” –Og Mandino
  • Life is a marathon, not a sprint. It’s “focused intensity, OVER TIME…” Don’t quit. Stay on course. Keep moving.
  • Scripture: “Run in such a way as to get the prize.” (1 Corinthians 9:24, NIV)
